Parenting: How to...when you don't know how to...

Oh Google... my search history is full of, how to ________? I’ve asked more how to questions than I’m willing to admit. However, today something different happened. My fingers went to type, “how to make sure my child has a good work ethic” and before I could even hit the h on my keyboard, my spirit said, “follow God's model”.

God gave us the blueprint. Create 6 days of the week and rest on the 7th. I believe God wants us to enjoy life, travel and relish in His creation. But, He also wants us to work hard and not waste the talents He has given us.

I don’t believe “working hard” is only linked to our day jobs. Although, we should show up and do our best for our employers, it’s deeper than what we do at our 9-5.

I believe it also means using our spiritual gifts. On your Saturday off, practice the piano, text that person God put on your heart, speak life into the person you see in the home decor store. Work on cultivating the things God has placed on the inside of you.

We are responsible for the use of our God given abilities and as parents we should partner with Him to bring out the best in our children.

As I write this, Chadwick Boseman comes to mind. He was a man of faith and followed his conviction. He knew when to say no to something that didn’t align with his core beliefs. He set an example by living his life to the fullest and not wasting any of his God given abilities.

Let’s set an example for our children and partner with our Heavenly Father to raise children after God's own heart. He knows best. I mean, He is the One who created them.

Scriptures:

Colossians 3:22-23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Philippians 2:14-15

"Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world."

Proverbs 14:23

"In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty."

Proverbs 16:3

"Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established."

Romans 12:7-8

"If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly."

Much love,

Victoria
