Legacy. It’s not just what achievements are recorded. It’s not just who’s left when you’re gone. It’s how you inspire those after to survive. It’s how you take a life of darkness, and leave a footprint of light. You see, my family and I come from a race of people that had to live by faith, that had to learn to praise while wearing shackles and chains.
But even imprisoned, my Black ancestors tasted freedom in the Spirit. They believed in the Waymaker and in the promise of His liberty. They didn't let their futures be stopped by racism, because they knew they were on the winning side.
So today, it's our assignment to ensure their same Spirit, their same belief, their same unyielding grit continues to be passed on. Their faith didn't just amount to a Negro spiritual; it opened up doors that they didn't even get a chance to see.
Fiveseatsblog exists because our ancestors dreamed it; they sang about it; they danced in chains over the possibility of it. We will continue on their legacy in the Spirit. Because, like my ancestors, we know, it's what keeps us alive.
